The novel moves back and forth in time in an attempt to piece together the jigsaw of Robert Bellamy’s life. As the title suggests, this jigsaw can never be quite completed. In his dissatisfaction with his life and his rebellion as a senior sales officer, he seems almost to be taking part in a dress rehearsal for Reggie Perrin.
