Going Gently (2000)
If David had to choose a favourite, this is it. It’s the tale of a woman of 99 who has had a stroke, but, despite this, it is very much a comedy, albeit with much sadness in it. But ultimately, as Kate takes refuge from the reality of her life in hospital by reliving her own life, it is uplifting, for what a life Kate has led. She has had six husbands, even though she is a very moral woman. She has known great joys and sorrows. Born in 1900, she has been affected by two world wars and has almost survived this stormy century. To survive to 99, and have such memories, that is not sad.
